Volkswagen Golf Engine Oil Finder

The VW Golf has now been in production for an unbelievable 46 years - there is actually nothing more to add to this success story, because that is proof enough of the popularity of the compact car from Wolfsburg. The first generation of the Golf was manufactured in 1974, the eighth generation has been doing its rounds since December 2019 and the classic has managed to remain a Golf, but has nevertheless changed. At the moment there is nothing to suggest that it won't be able to continue as successfully for another 46 years.

VW gave the seventh generation of its compact classic presented in 2012 a sleeker design and given the Golf 7 even more space and assistance systems to go with the refreshed outfit, just like in newer vehicle generations. Since then Volkswagen has been making its compact classic (2019 - current) fit for the future and is installing technology in the Golf 8 for partially autonomous with new on-board functions. This suits customers who buy the Golf as they are used to state-of-the-art technology and comfort. In line with this concept, certain 2020+ variants will be given a futuristic digital interior that meets the expectations of the smartphone generation with touchscreen operation.

As a compact car, the Golf is perfectly designed for everyday use by single people through to small families. As a hatchback, it is not too small, offers enough space both inside and in the trunk and the topics of safety and infotainment are not neglected either. But the Golf has even more to offer, because it is also available as a sporty GTI version and as an environmentally friendly plug-in version. If the space in the compact hatchback is not enough, you can easily opt for the station wagon variant.

Motor oil is a vital part of your Volkswagen Golf's engine. It provides the much needed lubrication to many of the internal parts of an engine. One of its key job is to prevent wear and tear on the moving parts and helps keep the engine running smoothly. Without oil, the engine would cease up almost immediately.

Regularly checking and changing your VW Golf engine oil is really important. Every time you start and run your car, very fine by-products from the combustion in the engine will be collected in the engine oil. This is one of the reasons why over time the oil goes black. If these contaminants build up too much and exceed the capacity of the oil it can have a negative impact on your car’s overall efficiency and actually effect its performance as it creates sludge and increased wear in the engine block.

Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.

So which engine oil should you buy for your Volkswagen Golf? Whether you are topping up your Volkswagen Golf oil or doing a full change of your Volkswagen Golf's oil it is really important that you use the correct grade of oil.

We have listed all the Volkswagen Golf models and engine types in the following table, as well as the correct engine oil grade for each of the cars. You can use the search and filter to easily find the right engine oil for your Volkswagen Golf.

VW Golf Variants

Golf Hatchback - The classic Golf is a typical hatchback compact car. This type of vehicle is by far the most popular in Germany and the Golf has certainly contributed to a large extent. A hatchback model is practical because, in contrast to the notchback, the trunk also includes the rear window and therefore more space is available.

Golf Compact Athlete - The hatchback Golf is also available with a more powerful engine than the Golf GTI. A compact sports car is often a good compromise between suitability for everyday use and driving pleasure, which the GTI in particular masters perfectly. If you want, you can leisurely drive your groceries home, if you don't, you can step on the gas on the country road. Both are possible.

Golf Hybrid - VW also launched the new Golf as the Golf GTE. Offering the bestseller as a plug-in hybrid again is almost logical in view of the current increase in sales of cars with alternative drives. A hybrid model is a good start towards eco-driving.

Golf Station Wagon - If you want it to be even more practical, the Golf is also available as a station wagon. The Golf Variant is the classic station wagon version, with the Golf Alltrack you can even drive on easy terrain. Here, the Golf proves to be a reliable donkey with plenty of space.
