The BMW 2 Series Overview

With the BMW 2 Series, BMW has been offering compact vehicles in different body styles since 2014. The 2-Series can be ordered as a coupe, active tourer and convertible. The 2 series has been available to order from dealers since March 2018. The two-door coupe has the designation F22, the convertible runs under the abbreviation F23. F45 stands for the small 2 Series Active Tourer, F46 for the Gran Tourer and F87 for the powerful BMW M2 Coupe. Choose from the following petrol models: 216i, 218i, 220i, 228i, 230i, M235i, M235ix, M240i, M240ix, M2 and M2 Competition (136 to 450 hp). The 216d, 218d, 220d, 220d xDrive and 225d are available as turbo diesels (116 to 224 hp).

The BMW 2 Series is available in the following generations:

Whether you drive an older BMW 2 Series F22 or one of the newer models like the F87 or G42 - they all need to have a oil change as part of the service. The engines of the BMW 2 Series may only be used with an engine oil that has a manufacturer's approval - our recommendation for numerous engines is a 5W-30 (Longlife) oil with the BMW Longlife-04 approval.

BMW 2 Series Oil Change Interval

Every BMW 2 Series has a flexible oil change interval, depending on driving conditions. The oil must be changed after 30,000 kilometers or 24 months at the latest.

BMW offers only the Longlife Service for the 2 Series, no fixed intervals. This is because it has proven itself to renew the engine oil exactly when the quality is no longer sufficient. This means that the on-board computer estimates the current condition of the engine oil based on various measurement values and data, and thus determines the best time for an oil change. For example, the number of starts or sensor data from combustion are relevant for the on-board computer.

How Much Oil Does a 2-Series Need?

BMW uses different engines in the 2 Series. Due to the different designs, they also differ in their filling quantities. For example, in the BMW 2 Coupe M2 Competition 302 kW 10/2012 - 11/2014, 6.5 liters of oil fit into the engine. For a BMW 2 Active Tourer 225 xe 100 kW 09/2014 - 02/2018, however, 4.25 liters are sufficient . All engines in the 2 series fall within this range.

What Engine Oil For BMW 2 Series?

When buying motor oil, always pay attention to the approval and not the SAE number. When designing the engine in your BMW 2 Series, the developers decided on certain engine oil parameters right from the start. The calculations of dimensions and tolerances as well as the tests were carried out using these values. This engine oil with the correct release is tailored exactly to your machine.

Tip: Always keep a 1 litre bottle of the correct engine oil in your trunk. Then you will definitely have the right oil at hand. Petrol stations only carry a small range of motor oil. The likelihood of yours being there is very low.

How to reset the inspection / oil change light on BMW 2 Series F22/F23/F45/F46/F87

Step 1: First turn on your car without starting the engine. Use the START button without starting the car's engine.

Step 2: Once you have turned on your car, then press and hold the RESET button . Press the RESET button on the bottom left of the dash to take you to one of the service lights.

Step 3: Go to "ENGINE OIL" section. After that, you can scroll through the menu by clicking the same button ( RESET button ) and find the service reminder you want to reset.

Step 4: In the fourth step, press and hold the RESET button again. If you want to reset the service reminder now, press and hold the button until the message "Perform reset?" appears on your screen.

Step 5: Release the RESET button and hold it down a third time. You need to press and hold the RESET button again to confirm the process and this will then complete the reset process.

How to reset inspection or oil change light on the BMW 2 Series G42

This guide is for the latest generation of BMW 2 Series. You can reset the service interval on this generation with the BC button at the end of the left lever.

Step 1: First, press the start button three times in a row (at a moderate pace) and wait for the message "Diagnostic mode active" to appear.

Step 2: Now hold down the BC button for a few seconds to get to the reset menu.

Step 3: From the reset menu, you can scroll through different services. To do this, use the BC button to scroll through the menu until you get to the "ENGINE OIL" menu item.

Step 4: To reset the service reminder, you need to press and hold the BC button again, it will then automatically ask you if you want to reset the service.

Step 5: In the final step, release and hold the BC button repeatedly to complete the process completely.
