The X5 was BMWs first SUV – it has been in production since the late 1990s and is now in its fourth generation. BMW itself calls the model SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). The concept is very successful and sold more than 160,000 cars worldwide in 2021 alone.
Like its predecessor, the new generation of the BMW X5, the G05, is available as a petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid – there is no purely electric version. Even the smallest engine still boasts an impressive 231hp. An 8-speed automatic transmission has been fitted as standard in the BMW X5 since 2010.
The BMW X5 G05 is 4.92 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1.75 meters high. This makes it 3.6cm longer and almost 7cm wider than its predecessor, the F15. The basis of the vehicle is a new modular platform, which increases the wheelbase to 2.98 meters.
Money Saving Fact: Changing the oil in your BMW X5 will definitely be the cheapest way. However most people don't want the hassle of getting all oily and dirty. But you can still save money even if you use a local garage or Bentley dealership. Most people don't realise that when taking your BMW X5 for a service you can provide the oil for the oil change yourself. You can order the right type of oil cheaply on the internet or pick up at your local automotive centre (like Halfords or even some supermarkets). But make sure that you buy an Bentley approved engine oil so there are no problems with your factory warranty.
Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.
So which engine oil should you buy for your BMW X5? Whether you are topping up your BMW X5 oil or doing a full change of your BMW X5's oil it is really important that you use the correct grade of oil.
We have listed all the BMW X5 models and engine types in the following table, as well as the correct engine oil grade for each of the cars. You can use the search and filter to easily find the right engine oil for an BMW X5.

The first generation of the X5, the E53, rolled into BMW dealerships for the first time in 1999. The reason for entering the SUV segment was simply the booming market. At the market launch, the all-wheel drive vehicle ran with six and eight-cylinder engines and, depending on the engine, delivered between 184 and an impressive 360hp. A four-cylinder only brought the downsizing from the third generation with it. In 2003, the E53 received another facelift, which essentially contained new headlights, taillights and a radiator grille. This was followed in 2006 by the second generation, the E70 which had grown in every dimension and was more powerful. Technically, the BMW X5 E70 is optionally equipped with xDrive, an optimized all-wheel drive system. The 2010 facelift brought further innovations: the 8-speed automatic transmission that has been installed as standard since then and consumption that has been reduced by almost ten percent are particularly noteworthy. The third generation followed in 2013 with the F15, this time only slightly larger and for the first time with a variant without all-wheel drive.
