Since it was first produced in 2010, the Audi A1 has been one of the most popular models from the German car manufacturer. Ever since day one, the Audi A1 has been equipped with a choice of petrol or diesel engine (8X1 and 8XK). The petrol engine is the typical Audi TFSI engine while the diesel engine is an Audi TDI engine. At the same time, Audi offers the A1 as a sporty S1 variant.

So what is the S1 and how is it different to the A1?
The S1 is a turbocharged powerhouse and represents the high-performance variant of the Audi A1 hatchback. Despite being absent from the market since September 2017, anticipation builds for its return alongside the launch of the revamped 2018 Audi A1 hatchback.

Nestled beneath the hood is a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine sourced from the Audi S3, boasting 228bhp and 370Nm of torque. This formidable power enables the compact vehicle to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds, ultimately reaching an electronically capped top speed of 155mph.

Choosing the right oil type

Regardless of whether you have the petrol, diesel or more recently the hybrid engine, its important to make sure that you buy the correct engine oil for your A1 or S1.

Depending on your year and model, a total of three different viscosities are used for all Audi A1/S1 engines. For example, the 1.0L Audi A1 may only use different viscosities compared to the Audi A1 engine oils for the 1.2L to 2.0L machines (petrol).

For the diesel engine, the Audi A1 a different grade of oil could be required so be sure to check that too.

The Importance of Engine Oil in your A1 / S1?

But no matter which version of the popular small car it is, one thing is certain: each of these engines requires regular care to ensure a long service life. Changing the oil is one of the most important maintenance tasks for your A1. The engine oil takes on many necessary tasks in the engine, such as lubricating the moving components or sealing between the combustion chambers and the oil circuit. It also dissipates heat, protects the metal surfaces from corrosion and transports dirt particles to the oil filter. During operation, combustion residues get into the engine oil, some of which lead to chemical reactions. The engine oil wears out and can no longer fulfill its functions optimally over time.

How often should you change the oil in a A1?

Audi offers a choice of fixed and flexible intervals for the A1. You can decide for yourself which variant suits your driving style better.

With a fixed interval, the engine oil is changed every 15,000 km or once a year . This change cycle is suitable if you often move around the city and on short journeys with your Audi A1.

The longlife interval is more worthwhile for long-distance drivers and if your A1 normally reaches its regular operating temperature. The oil needs to be changed after 30,000 km or every 2 years at the latest . Using various parameters and measurement data, the on-board computer evaluates the real condition of the engine oil and draws conclusions about wear.

Tip: If you want to test which interval best suits your driving behavior, then start with the flexible long-life interval. If you have a change interval of around 15,000/1 year, then the fixed interval might be more suitable for you. Because long-life oils are usually slightly more expensive than standard engine oils.

How much oil does an A1 need?

Audi installs a variety of engines in the A1. These have different sizes and designs - which means that the filling quantities are also different. For example, in an S1 quattro with 170 kW, a full 5.8 litres of oil fit into the engine. For an A1 1.4 TFSI with 136k 3.6 litres of oil are sufficient. These differences in filling quantities have a direct impact on the price of the oil change.
