Audi A4 Engine Oil Finder

The Audi A4 is an extremely popular vehicle throughout Europe, the UK and USA, especially the diesel models. Whether as a company car or a family car, it has been doing its job faithfully on the motorways, country roads and in the cities for decades.

With so many different options of engine oil out there, choosing right one for your Audi A4 may be a little confusing for a lot of people and can even be quite overwhelming. There is a range of different engine oils suitable for various Audi models, both petrol and TDI diesel engines. Some engine oils are specifically designed for Audi A3 models such as the Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI, while other oils are designed for petrol engine models such as the Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI.

If the oil lamp lights up or the on-board computer annoys you with the message "Oil change now", it's time to top or or change your A4's engine oil.

Instructions For Topping up engine oil in Audi A4

  • 1) Obtain the right engine oil for the Audi A4 of your engine.
  • 2) Unlatch the bonnet and measure the oil level. Make a note of where the level is.
  • 3) Then carefully fill a little engine oil (approx. 100-150ml) into the Audi A4 oil nozzle.
  • 4) Be patient now for a short time before measuring the oil level again with the oil dipstick.
  • 5) Do not start the Audi A4 again until you have ensured that the oil level is at the normal level (indicated by the markings).

Between 2000 and 2004, the Audi A4 B6 (Type 8E) was available as a sedan and station wagon. The popular mid-size car was equipped with petrol engines, such as the 1.6, 1.8 Turbo, 2.0 FSI, 2.4, 3.0 and 4.2 litres in the Quattro. The proven 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI Turbo Diesel were also available. Changing the oil with the right type of oil is the most important service work that ensures high mileage.

What Engine Oil For Audi A4?

Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.

So which engine oil should you buy for your Audi A4? Whether you are topping up your Audi A4 oil or doing a full change of your Audi A4's oil it is really important that you use the correct grade of oil.

How to check oil level on the Audi A4 if the oil lamp comes on

If the oil lamp (note: do not confuse this with the oil pressure warning lamp) on your Audi A4 lights up, drive straight to the nearest automotive store or petrol station (albeit at low speed and revs). The right amount of oil depends on the engine. The 1.6 litre petrol engine only needs 3.6 litres of engine oil for the oil change, the 3.2 litre machine requires 6.2 litres of oil with the right specification.

  • 1) Make sure that the Audi A4 is as level as possible (not on a slope or hill).
  • 2) Now switch off the engine.
  • 3) Now pause for about 3-5 minutes before measuring the oil level. This allows the oil from the engine to get into the oil pan.
  • 4) Now you can open the hood of the Audi A4.
  • 5) In the middle of the engine compartment you should find the oil dipstick (ring at the top) of your Audi A4.
  • 6) Pull the dipstick out of the holder.
  • 7) Now clean the oil dipstick with a cloth, handkerchief or toilet paper.
  • 8) Now insert the clean rod back into the holder.
  • 9) Now pull the dipstick out again.
  • 10) The layer of oil should be found in the middle of the 'minimum' and 'maximum' marks.
  • 11) If this is not the case, oil that is compatible with the Audi A4 must normally be filled into the oil socket.
