Audi A2 Oil Type Finder

About the Audi A2

Although the A2 model initially attracted buyers with its variable interior concept and extremely economical fuel consumption, even the facelift in 2003 was unable to revive demand. In 2011, Audi presented an A2 Concept at the IAA, which was supposed to go into series production as an electric vehicle and hybrid, but stopped development a short time later. But regardless of whether you have chosen an A2 from 1999 or from the last year of production in 2005: every combustion engine in the A2 series needs a regular oil change so that the engine works well and lasts a long time.

Should I use synthetic, semi synthetic or mineral oil in my A2?

Only fully and partially synthetic motor oils can be used in the Audi A2. Depending on the year and model there are a number of different oil grades you can use according to the VW 50400/50700 standards. These are the only oils which are approved by VW for A2 engines and can be used without risking your warranty and are suitable for use under all driving conditions. These oils are often referred to as Longlife 3 oils.

On WhatCarOil.com we do not perform a qualitative comparison of individual oil brands because every engine oil that meets the standards can be used in the Audi A2. In general, when changing the oil in your A2, it is recommended that both the oil filter and the oil drain plug are replaced as part of the oil change. If you are simply topping up the oil in your A2 then this is not necessary.

How Often Should I Change My Audi A2's Oil?

If you set up the long-life service on your Audi A2, the engine oil for petrol engines will be changed after 30,000km or 2 years at the latest - whichever comes first. The diesel engines can travel a maximum of 50,000km / 2 years before the oil is changed. If the fixed interval is activated, the oil change is scheduled regularly after 15,000km / 1 year.

Under difficult operating conditions, the engine oil must generally be replaced every 15,000km or once a year; this also applies to the long-life service. Difficult operating conditions include all situations in which the engine burns less cleanly. For example, if you often drive short distances or regularly tow a trailer, the engine oil will wear out more quickly.

How Much Oil Does An A2 Need?

For every A2 engine, the capacity depends on the individual design. At 3.4 litres , the two petrol engines 1.4 and 1.6 FSI require slightly less engine oil than the two 1.4 TDI engines, which have a capacity of 4.2 litres. The 1.2 TDI needs the most oil at 4.3 litres.

When filling with engine oil, always make sure that the level is between min and max on the dipstick when the engine is cold. Because too much engine oil can damage your A2 engine just as much as too little.
