Audi TT Oil Type Finder

Here we learn how to measure the oil level in the Audi TT (including the RS & TTS) and how to top up with suitable engine oil when the oil lamp comes on in this sporty roadster. We also take a look at suitable engine oil types for the Audi TT/RS/TTS engines and models.

Measure the oil level in the Audi TT/RS/TTS – when the oil light is on

  • • Make sure that your Audi TT is as level as possible (not on a slope or hill).
  • • Then turn off the TT engine with the ignition key or start button.
  • • Wait about 3-5 minutes before checking the oil level. This allows the engine oil to run out of the engine and the lines back into the oil pan.
  • • Now you can open the Audi TT/RS/TTS bonnet.
  • • In the engine compartment you can see the oil dipstick (ring at the top) of your Audi TT/RS/TTS.
  • • Pull the dipstick out of the holder.
  • • Now clean the dipstick with a cloth, handkerchief or toilet paper.
  • • Then insert the cleaned oil dipstick back into the holder.
  • • Now pull it out of the hole again.
  • • The oil film must be found between the "minimum – bottom" and "maximum – top" markings.

If this is not the case, oil suitable for the Audi TT/RS/TTS must usually be filled into the oil socket.

What Engine Oil For Audi TT?

In principle, only engine oils that have the right specification including manufacturer approval can be used in the Audi TT and also in the RS & TTS - you can recognise these by the designation VW 501 01 or 505 00, for example.

Every engine oil will have its viscosity grade labelled on the packaging. This will look something like 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40. This grading is used to measure how thick / fluid the oil is and help ensure you buy the right oil for your car. The lower the viscosity grade of the oil, the more fluid and thinner it will be than those with a high grade (higher numbers) which will be much less running and thick.

So which engine oil should you buy for your Audi TT? Whether you are topping up your Audi TT oil or doing a full change of your Audi TT's oil it is really important that you use the correct grade of oil.

We have listed all the Audi TT models and engine types in the following table, as well as the correct engine oil grade for each of the cars. You can use the search and filter to easily find the right engine oil for an Audi TT.
