Land Rover Discovery Oil Type Finder

About The Discovery

Fans of the British way of life appreciate the early Discovery I of the LJ type and the Series II of the LT type as comfortable off-road vehicles with the robust appeal of the Land Rover brand. After the turn of the millennium, Land Rover adapted the look of the Discovery III (Type LA) more closely to the brand's luxury SUV and expanded the range to include the Discovery Sport variant (Type LC). We've looked at the manufacturer's documents to see what changes there were to the maintenance intervals of the different Discovery generations. In this article you will find out details about oil changes, oil quantities and viscosities with manufacturer approval.

Landrover Discovery Oil Change Costs

In order to find out how much an oil change on a Discovery off-road vehicle costs, we started a price comparison in the UK. Our test car was a Discovery IV with a 2.7 TD engine, for which we found large differences in oil change costs. An independent car repair shop in Blackburn was particularly cheap, charging just under £84 for the service. We would have had to pay almost £100 more for the same oil change in Manchester, where a workshop added almost £194 to the bill in London.

Save Money on Your Discovery Oil Change: DIY oil changes for your Landrover Discovery can be a cost-effective option, but not everyone enjoys getting their hands dirty. Even if you choose to have a local garage or Landrover dealership perform the task, there are still ways to save money.

Consider supplying the oil for your next oil change; you can easily purchase the appropriate type online or at a local automotive store (such as Halfords or a grocery store) for a reasonable price. Just make sure the oil you use is Land Rover approved, as using an unapproved product may void your factory warranty.

Land Rover Discovery oil change interval

How often the oil should be changed in your Land Rover depends largely on the model generation and everyday use. For the Discovery II 2.5 Td5 type LT, the manufacturer recommends adding fresh lubricant every 20,000 km or annually. For newer LA generation SUVs, you should schedule an oil change every 15,000 miles or once a year. For the Discovery Sport LC, Land Rover has set intervals of 16,000 km or one year. However, there are exceptions: If you often use your Discovery under difficult operating conditions, such as in short-distance traffic or on dusty roads, the engine oil should be checked more often and the oil changed earlier. For the Discovery III, for example, Land Rover has defined an interval of 6,000 km or three months.

How much oil does a Land Rover Discovery take?

If you are unsure when it is time to change the oil, you should have the viscosity of the engine oil checked at a specialist workshop. Employees can use a visual inspection to assess whether the oil still has the required viscosity to adequately lubricate the engine. If the viscosity is reduced or the lubricant is too dirty due to deposits, service must be carried out to avoid engine damage. You can also ask the workshop which types of oil are suitable for the Discovery and Discovery Sport. For the V8 model of the Series II Type LT, for example, Land Rover has approved the following viscosity classes: 0W40, 5W30, 5W40, 5W60, 10W40 and 15W40.

Transmission oil change: manual transmission or automatic transmission oil

Information about changing the transmission oil on the Land Rover Discovery and the Sport versions is also available in the data lists above. There you can find details about the viscosity and oil quantity of models with manual and automatic transmissions.

The Different Land Rover Discovery Engines

Although positioned below the Range Rover, the Discovery is no less high-quality in the British car manufacturer's model range. The fact that the modern day Discovery has mild hybrid engines under the hood should not hide the fact that the solid Brit is equipped with a lot of horses - because a look at the technical data reveals that the Discovery pulls through the country with at least 249 hp. This is by no means mild, but rather brutal, and the Discovery as an SUV is also a real wreck. At least in terms of fuel consumption, the car shows that it is being a bit lenient: anyone who suspects a raging throat will be disabused when the average consumption of 7.3 to 7.5 litres of diesel is stated. The top petrol engine is approved more, but does not crack the 10-litre mark on paper.
